Types of Allergy Testing
Immunotherapy tests, also known as allergy tests, are used to identify specific allergens that trigger allergic reactions in individuals. These tests are conducted to determine the underlying cause of allergic symptoms and to guide the development of an appropriate treatment plan, such as allergen immunotherapy (allergy shots or sublingual drops).
The two main types of Allergy tests are:
- Skin Prick Test (SPT): This test involves placing a small amount of allergen extract on the skin and then pricking or scratching the skin to allow the allergen to enter. If a person is allergic to the substance, a raised, red, and itchy bump (wheal) will appear within about 15-20 minutes.
- Blood Test (Specific IgE test): A blood sample is taken and tested for the presence of specific Immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies to various allergens. Elevated levels of specific IgE antibodies indicate an allergic reaction to the corresponding allergen.
These tests can identify allergens such as pollen, dust mites, pet dander, mold spores, certain foods, and insect venom. By identifying specific allergens, our providers can tailor immunotherapy treatments to desensitize patients to these allergens, reducing the severity of allergic symptoms over time.
